Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy Nursing

A Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy Nursing  works within the endoscopy unit of a hospital or other medical institution in which procedures including an endoscope are used. These miniature cameras are used to view problems within the body, usually originating in the genitourinary system or the digestive system. A nurse’s responsibility within this unit usually falls under the roles associated with sedation and post-procedure care. Working within different medical centers will give endoscopy nurses different responsibilities and roles to play within a procedure as some doctors give more independence to nurses within this profession, while others prefer to do much of the work themselves. Nurses who work in this position are also referred to as gastroenterology nurses due to the area of focus during procedures.
